Final Blog

For my reflection to the entire study of the course “theory and method for media technology”, it can be described as a process from abstract concepts to virtual or practical knowledge. As the aim of the course is to provide us a deeper understanding of scientific theories and methods relevant for media technology research, now I am more confident to deal with the scientific research with the knowledge gained from this significant course.

Actually during the first weeks I was confused that only abstract philosophy was discussed in the class, while later I was aware of the essential guidance for our further scientific research of media technology. As media technology mainly focus on developing application interacted with human, it is obvious that learning humans from philosophy such as the relationship between knowledge, cognition and perception. Furthermore discussing and studying media in philosophical way is necessary for us to figure out what role of media technology plays in human society.

Based on six themes, here I intend to collate knowledge I learned to conclude two main research methods according to the key concepts and relative sample literatures required during the preparation of every lecture. That is also the most impressive and useful benefit I got from this course.

One is mainly using quantitative method to obtaining knowledge. Like the paper I read for theme 4 as Internet and Social Media Use as a Resource Among Homeless Youth written by Eric Rice, Anamika Barman-Adhikari is a typical research paper based on quantitative method. When we try to explore some interesting social phenomenon or human behaviors, the whole procedure can be structured as formulating a hypothesis, selecting sample objects, designing an experiment such as interview, observation and questionnaire test, gathering data, analyzing statistics by comparison or classifying to summarize results, discussing results and verifying the hypothesis. One thing we may ignore generally but shows strong impact of reliability of empirical data in one of my practical project for another course is testing the questionnaires before conducting the experiment. Without validating the test we just asked the participants to do the test in which time recording of reaction for every question and the rate of correct answers are used for data analysis. During the test, a very serious problem appeared that the test is quite long so it is obvious that user became fatigue at the test and the results were misleading.

The process from getting an idea to selling it can be regarded as another typical research method. According to five steps from Haibo Li, first step which also occupies 90% of our effort is coming up with an idea. The left steps are filtering the idea, validating the idea, evaluating the idea and marketing the idea. Designing a good prototype of the solution to the idea I think would be the best choice to evaluate the idea and also help interact between desired system and users. As the prototype is developed by the original method and key ideas, it should cover almost considered features or possibly it would cause application not to be used as the full system was designed. Liking “Turn Your Mobile Into the Ball: Rendering Live Football Game Using Vibration” written by Shafiq ur Réhman, Jiong Sun, Li Liu, and Haibo Li, it is a complete model sample of this kind of research method which covers proposing the key idea, designing the experimental platform and even user experience.

No matter what kind of research method it is, theory undoubtedly appears and supports the research. A very impressive conclusion about theory to me is that theory is something we construct to explain what, why and how of an event or study. Therefore when we want to pick up theory as reference, we need to be patient to selecting the real theory rather than misunderstanding empirical data, hypothesis and references as theory.

There is a interesting view about case study i got from llias’ lecture that case study can be a way to start a big study, once we got enough knowledge about a particular situation, we can move it to a widely use. Although I know case study applied both in quantitative and qualitative research, one problem I still confused about is when and why case study can be used in scientific research . As the definition of case study is explained as an in depth study of a particular situation to group, it has a significant limitation which is difficult to generalize result to larger population or situation. For example, if defining an idea from a case study and then designing a prototype referring to the method, it seems that probably only a small market is suitable for the idea.

I learned a lot of knowledge about doing a good scientific research from the course, but it is not enough, reading more excellent scientific paper and practice developing complete research constantly is also important because knowledge is always obtained from experiences.

Hi Denise,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. I really agree with your ideas about " god's point of view". Actually before I read your understanding of Kant's method, I am a little confused. Thanks for your perfect explanation. Nice job!

Hi,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Same as you , after one week I can finally get understanding of some concepts. The last paragraph in your blog is really useful for me since I am confused with a prior. The example mentioned help me understand better now. Great job!

Hi,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. By reading your blogs for theme1, you really did a lot of work for this course and you have a good understanding for Kant and Plato's method. And it's worth mention that your categories is really good job.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. During my group discussion, we also talked about synthetic judgement and analytic judgement. In my opinion, Synthetic judgement is equal to conclusion which can be expanded and Analytic judgement means knowledge results from analysis and no more knowledge can be added.

Hi Oscar,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The same issue as I talked about in my blog, I cannot agree more with your ideas about analytic judgement and synthetic judgement. After reading your good explanation, I get a better understanding of a priori knowledge.

Hi Sanna,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with your ideas about "in itself", but I also think subject and object compose the world. So I am confused that if all people dies, wether will the world not exist? Anyway, your reflection is awesome!

Hi Masha,
From your post I can know you really made a lot contribution to this week.I like your example for pure knowledge. I think you really enjoyed this course and got the answer to the two question. Nice job!

Hi Emil,
Nice reflection! After reading your blog, you did a lot of job for this lecture. Your opinions for materials are impressed. After all, I think this lecture give us a chance to use another way to see the world.
Hi,
Interesting reflection! Our group has the same discussion topics about a priori knowledge, you give me a new idea to understand knowledge. And you have a better understand of Kant's method after one week. Nice job!
Hi,
You summarized the questions for the lecture and give your own ideas. Interesting reflection! Although the teacher explained a lot and gave an example that wether the world still exist if all people die, "World in itself" is difficult for me to understand. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Nice job!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think you did a good job and have a good understanding of this lecture. For the concept of nominalism, your explanation is really clear for me to understand. Under your definition of nominalism, do you think there are some relationship between nominalism and realism?

Hi~
I think you really devoted a lot of time to this lecture. Nice job! Actually I also met many difficulties while reading materials. And during our group discussion, we also talked about "aura". It is an extremely abstract concept to understand without practical examples. I advise you can try to read some explanation literatures which are discussing about the method of philosophers
.

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. you really did a great reflection! You mentioned the background and make a connection between Benjamin and Adorno and Horkheimer, it is really nice to help me to get a better comparison of the two papers. And I also agree with your ideas about nominalism. Well done!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your ideas. I agree with you that this theme is much more interesting and easier reading than the first one. Your understanding of nominalism is easy to understand so that I think you have got a good understanding of this lecture. Good luck!

Hi Malina~
Your reflection is really interesting and different from others. Thank you for sharing a lot of extension beyond Benjamin and Adorno & Horkheimer. I agree with your connection between nominalism and enlightenment. Nice job!

Hi~
First I really like the way you concentrate on history to find answers. Background is significant for us to understand the purpose of the text and how the author write the text. Thanks for your clear understanding of superstructure and substructure, I finally get informative of the two concepts.

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Our group discussed the same topics as yours. I like your comments for enlightment which describe in a way that nothing that cannot be measured is left in general and thus is rather a form of taking relation between myth and unknown to an extreme degree. Nice job!

Hi~
your reflection is really wonderful! First I really agree with your ideas that we have to observe everything more carefully and also start to question the concepts. For the understanding of aura, I think naturally object has its own aura in different time or space because it will create unique sense to the observer while changing the situation.
Nice job and good luck!

Hej~
Your reflection is interesting because of different view of this lecture. You talked about Germany fascism, I really agree with you that how dangerous can media technology be if it comes in the wrong hands. We should pay more attention to how to use media technology in a wise way so that we will not be led astray by it. Thank you for sharing your ideas!

Hello~
Your conclusion that Fascism inherits tendencies of nominalism is really direct and awesome. Actually I am confused with why the author put nominalism, fascism, and enlightenment together, after reading your reflection of lecture, I am clear for that now. Thank you for sharing you thoughts! Good luck~

Hi~
I like your reflection to the theory. Especially I really with the idea that "the hypothesis is a bridge between data and theory". Because through resulting from the data, hypothesis can be verified to be a theory. You also explain a lot about hypothesis which was not discussed in my group but I am really confused about it. Thank you for sharing you thoughts. Good job!

Hi~
Your reflection is really interesting! You make a combination between the theory and media technology in the discussion of theory and hypothesis. That is great to get better understanding of it. Theory and hypothesis are often mixed, but your explanation for their definition is clear enough for me to figure out what is theory and what is hypothesis.
Nice job!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You seems devote a lot of time and effort to the posts this week. Nice job! As you highlight that theory presents a range of proposals to identify objects and their relationship to each other, I agree with that because theory is tested and accepted by a majority of experts in a particular field. Great job!

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts about this week's theme. Your well-structured texts make it easy to follow. The concrete explanation of hypothesis and theory based on the example is really clear to express the relation and difference between hypothesis and theory. Good job!

Hi~
Thank you for your reflections! You succeeded in explaining the week's main achievements with the help of a clear structure shaping your thoughts. You raised a question that does every theory has to have a hypothesis, I agree with the answer because theory can also be concluded from prior experience. Thank you for sharing.

Hi~
Thanks for sharing your insights on this week's theme. I agree with your interesting idea that if enough people believe in a hypothesis that hypothesis is a theory because hypothesis is one way to get theory. In addition, discussing the definition of theory is really abstract and difficult during our group discussion. Good job!

Hi~
Thank you for your thoughts this week. Your clear structure of your reflections makes me easy to get the topic. This theme mainly focus on definition of many concepts.I agree with your definition of theory, I also conclude it in my reflection as theory is explaining what, why and how of an event or study. As your question about whether the theory is true, theory is concluded through practical identify or common experience, probably we cannot use true or false to judge it. Good job!

Hi~
You did a great job by structuring the main knowledge talked in the lecture and discussion during seminar. I found an unique idea in you reflection that a reason why humans construct theory is because they want to make connections between phenomena. It is really an interesting statement. Nice job!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Your reflection did a great job explaining theme 3. I have the same confusion as you about the question "what is man". It is abstract for us to understand. Theory covers a large range so that I agree with you that it was easier describing theory by what it is not rather than what it is. Nice job!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have to agree you that it is difficult and abstract to discuss the topics of this theme because this theme is mainly based on definition of some concepts. You talked about category of theory which is really unique. Good job!

Theme4

Hi~
Perfect summary of this week! You really did a lot of work to this theme. I cannot agree more with your idea that with a quantitative research method it is easier to generalize and compare your findings. Especially for engineering , statistics and analysis is absolutely useful in scientific research. Good job!!

Hi~
I can know you devote a lot of time to this week from your clear list of benefit , limitation and importance of quantitative research. I also have the feeling that the topic of this week is a little boring, because we have to gain knowledge related to quantitative research rather than discussing. Good job!

Hi~
Clear structure of your reflection is really impressive. I agree with your arguing that combining two forms of research is the best, because they are specific in different fields. I found wicked problems also be discussed in your group, your example is understandable to explain the key point of quantitative research. Good job!

Your summary of this week is really interesting. As I have the same experience as yours when I dealt with the task in first time. But it does show a good influence to our understanding of quantitative research. And I also agree with you the importance of designing good questionnaire in scientific research because questions directly influence the data being analyzed.
Good job!

Hi~
Clear comparison between qualitative research and quantitative research is is proposed in your reflection, I really like this. Your group discussion seems more practical because you talked about the role of two kinds of researches played respectively in a paper at the same time. It is available to obtain this knowledge.
Good job!

Hi Lisa~
Your reflection is really awesome especially the conclusion for every step of handling the idea successfully. I am interested in finding the billion-dollar idea. My understanding of that is that billion-dollor is a metaphor to explain that the idea should be valuable and meaningful but not regarded as a way to earn money.
Nice job!

Hi Rickard~
Such a good reflection! I like your clear explanation and comparison between industrial research and design research. You mentioned that using design to shape a prototype, but actually prototype can also be used to evaluate the theory, do you agree with it?
Nice job!

Hi~
I agree with you that the lecture by Haibo Li is really interesting. And the five steps from getting an idea to selling it you described are also the most impressive part for me especially the first step. When dealing with a research, figuring out the most appropriate and efficient problem is really the best beginning of a design research. Anyway, perfect reflection!

Hi~
It is great to see that you had a clear understand of this lecture through your reflection.
Almost every people are impressed by the theory of defining and solving a problem. After finding the right problem, catching up with appropriate solution is straightforward.
Good job!

Hi~
Thank you for sharing your reflection. I agree with your feeling about the two lectures. I think the lecture by Haibo Li mainly focus on the process included defining and solving problems, while the second lecture by Anders talked the prototype and its differences between industrial and design research. Nice job!

Hi~
I am really interested in reading your reflection about clear conclusion of case study and even combination between two research methods and cases study. I agree with your view that the aim of case study is to point out to new theories. As case study is base on specific case as situation or person, studying it is going to get a new conclusion. Case study is undoubtedly a valuable pattern of scientific research. Good job!
Glad to see some new ideas about qualitative method and case study. One is that the number of participant does not define it being quantitative or qualitative. I agree with that. And in terms of case study, when case study is building a theory on the field you are researching, actually it is also a process of research. So it is obvious to see that case study is one kind of research rather than method. Anyway, good work!

You made a clear conclusion of your work about this them. I agree with you that it is a little bit difficult to find a typical paper using a case study method. Although you did not mention too much details about case study, I know you also learn a lot from you reflection of your group discussion. Good luck!

4. http://suchapriori.blogspot.se/2015/10/post-theme-6.html?showComment=1445806200516#c2970159084531268337
Hi!
Your reflection is nice work! Especially i am interested in your third paragraph about theoretical saturation. It is a common truth not only for a particular study but also exist in almost every research. In stead of just a strategy, i think case study more like a strategy of research.
Good luck with last post!
Great reflection! I can know you made a lot of contribution to this theme by reading your post. I agree with your opinion that there are no clear guidelines when creating a case study. The aim of case study is to find out something new, so existed guidelines absolutely useless for case study. You also solve my question about whether a hypothesis is needed in a case study or not. Thank you and good luck with last blog.

Theme6: Qualitative and case study research (after)

This week I chose two papers to help discussing the topics of theme6, they are The internet and the possibilities of publicity by Malin, J. B. for qualitative research and The Benefits of Facebook “Friends:” Social Capital and College Students’ by Nicole B. Ellison et al for case study research. In the first paper, the authors use a typical qualitative method to discuss the implication of two modes of publicity for traditional broadcast and online communications. The second paper is a good example of case study about examining the relationship between use of Facebook, a popular online social network site, and the formation and maintenance of social capital. In addition, I read the paper 'Building Theories from Case Study Research' and get a basic knowledge about case study.

The most impressive knowledge I gained from Ilias is case study is something when you do not know much about a particular event or building a theory like the paper mentioned. Similar as the paper I chose, case study is a case study is an in depth study of a particular situation or group But it reminds me that case studies tend to be highly subjective and it is difficult to generalize results to a larger population or situation.

For this week's theme. we just had a seminar to discuss the topics. Our group mainly discussed whether hypothesis exists or plays a significant role in qualitative research or not and the definition of case study. Furthermore, as case study is usually used for building a theory, the case study research design is also useful for testing whether scientific theories and models actually work in the real world.

In conclusion, studying qualitative method is one way to strength the knowledge of quantitative research and case study is a new concept in scientific method which is really useful for me.

Theme5: Design research (after)

Post for  lecture on Wednesday

This lecture brought me a lot of information about design research. First Haibo Li gave us an interesting concept to emphasize the importance of positioning the problem that is defining a problem valued 90 percentage of the research processing plus solving a problem valued 10 percentage equals an excellent research. The Problem is key to a research no matter what kind of study is,  humanity or science. When dealing with a research, figuring out the most appropriate and efficient problem is the best beginning of a design research. With that, researchers can work out direct prototype to solve the problem.

Another knowledge of this lecture which is very impressive for me is the elevator pitch. Before this lecture, I thought prototype is the best and intuitive patten to express the solution to initial problem. But through learning the absolute processing of a research in the lecture, I realize that elevator pitch communicate much better than prototype as it presents the most attractive part and main design method to the audiences in an easy and quick way.

Now I feel that more confidence and knowledge support me to do academic research in the future.

Post for lecture on Friday

The view in Friday is another type to introduce design research. Anders first gave a question that what role a prototype play in design research. To be concluded, gaining knowledge is the final answer. Before that my understanding of prototype is more close to the role it acts in industry. In addition, empirical data are resulted and analyzed after prototype, that is also the reason sometimes the original prototype will be shaped again.

Anders also give the concept for what is research, but is different from the version proposed in Wednesday. It includes process, analysis and artificial. His idea can be described as finding the real problem is the main purpose of design. By carrying on design, research rethink wether the problem is what we want to catch up with.

Two lectures during this week help me learn the definition of design research, the processing of design, different method toward to design research. Overall I am satisfied with this week.
