The most impressive knowledge I gained from Ilias is case study is something when you do not know much about a particular event or building a theory like the paper mentioned. Similar as the paper I chose, case study is a case study is an in depth study of a particular situation or group. But it reminds me that case studies tend to be highly subjective and it is difficult to generalize results to a larger population or situation.
For this week's theme. we just had a seminar to discuss the topics. Our group mainly discussed whether hypothesis exists or plays a significant role in qualitative research or not and the definition of case study. Furthermore, as case study is usually used for building a theory, the case study research design is also useful for testing whether scientific theories and models actually work in the real world.
In conclusion, studying qualitative method is one way to strength the knowledge of quantitative research and case study is a new concept in scientific method which is really useful for me.
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! I agree with you that a case study does not seek out to address specific hypothesis. I think that it helps to enter into an area where you know too little and want to find out more. The main point of a case study is to build a theory and not test theory. During the discussion in the seminar, one person gave an example when a case study was useful: A paper about internet addiction in the year 2000 in which surveys and interviews were used. The person explained that it was a good example of trying to find out if something is there or not. What are your thoughts on this? Well done!

回复删除i agree that case study can be more subjective compare to quantitative and qualitative study as its aim are different. as you mentioned that case study tend to particular situation therefore it was looking for something new that exist in that particular situation first. and maybe boarder study can be explore later. case study didn't mean to generalize the result in the first place. instead looking for ways to find new theory like you said. case study is pretty interesting.
You're absolutely right that generalizing case studies can often be problematic - to me, that's probably one of the hardest parts in applying them to real-world research situations of my own. You can justify the position of your particular case within the relevant fields, but it's impossible to exactly pinpoint how it relates to all other possible cases - in the present, let alone in the future.
